Web connect is useful to import the .qbo files from the bank. However, there can be some errors that may lead to problems while importing the bank feeds through web connect. The errors display one of the following messages on your screen:

  • QuickBooks found an error. We can’t read the file {Your financial institution} sent.
  • “An error occurred while processing your online banking data.” -OR- “Your data was not imported into QuickBooks.”
  • “QuickBooks is unable to verify the Financial Institution Information for this download.”
  • “QuickBooks prompts you to select a new or existing account when you try to download.”
  • No Error

Causes Of Web Connect Import Errors

  • QB cannot read the data in the web connect file if the bank has provided any invalid information in the .qbo file.
  • Your bank does not provide the facility of importing the info to QuickBooks.
  • You are using the older QB version that does not have the feature of online banking.
  • The file you are trying to import has the extension other than .qbo. Other extensions such as qfx, iif, or csv are not accepted by QB.

Troubleshooting Steps To Fix The Import File Errors

We have four different troubleshooting methods in this case. Make sure you try them in sequence. If the 1st one works, you do not have to try the next one. Before you move to try the given steps, you must be aware of some of the important things given below:

  • Get the backup done for your current company file before importing the bank feeds. This helps you to keep your company file data safe.
  • Web connect is supported by some of the latest QB and Internet Explorer versions. Ensure you are using the ones that support.
  • In case you do not find the required bank in the options, navigate to the Deactivate Bank Feeds For An Account option and check that in the deactivated accounts.
  • You can try the following basic step to fix the issue. Make sure you are in the Classic mode.
  • When you are on the Main Menu of QB, go to Files and click on Preferences.
  • Click on the Checking tab and go to the Company Preference option.
  • Select the Classic Mode option from the bank Feeds to change the mode and tap Ok.

Step 1: Download The Bank Feeds From The Bank Website

  • Run the official website of your bank on any of the internet browsers.
  • Locate the .qbo file and download it. Save it on the desktop.
  • Go to the QuickBooks and click on the file from the main menu.
  • Click on Utilities and select the Import option in the window. Click on Webconnect Files in the Import window.
  • Now, browse correctly to the folder where you have stored the downloaded .qbo file and select it.
  • The Import Wizard will guide you through the steps. Follow the instructions in sequence.

Step 2: Use Test File To Get The Root Cause Of Error

  • Click on File option on QB main menu—open New Company from the options.
  • Choose Express Start and insert your bank account to the Charts of Accounts from the recently created test company.
  • Import the .qbo file by setting up the new account for bank feeds.

If you can successfully import the file, it means that the problem is in the original .qbo file.

  • In case you have already imported the transactions from the same account in the past, and now you are unable to do the same, you can try:
  • Resetting the current account that is causing the error. All you have to do is to deactivate the online connection.
  • Re-establishing the network with the bank. You can do this by importing the web connect file.
  • Fixing the data damage on your QB company file.

If you cannot import the file, there is a problem with .qbo file format.

  • You have to call your bank to fix this issue.
  • Try the next step to identify .qbo file errors.

Step 3: Recheck The Webconnect For Common Errors

  • Download the .qbo file in your pc and right tap on it. Take the cursor to Open with option and select Notepad. This will run the file in Notepad.
  • Some basic problems can cause errors. You have to check for them. For example, you can delete the ampersands if you find any.
  • You can modify or add the required spots.

For example:

  • Save the .qbo file and get the backup done of your QB company file before you proceed to import.

Step 4: Complete The Identity Confirmation

When you download and install the new QB version or upgrade your current QB version, you may have to identify the confirmation request.

Many financial institutions require this kind of confirmation in case you want to access the information from the PFM application. You have to check the notifications from your bank to confirm such requests. You can check the notification by signing into your bank account.
